Bay Area Events that Trump Probably Wouldn't Attend. You Know, Because they Help People and Causes

With the recent events unfolding across the country due to actions taken by the Trump Administration, it's becoming clearer that we ALL need to stand up for those in our communities who are being targeted. Whether it's joining a protest or rally, or going to an event that supports a worthy cause or local nonprofit, it's key that we be active and participate. With that being said, here are 5 events that are happening this week in the Bay Area that Mr. Trump would probably not attend. (We're going to keep these lists coming every Monday.)

Monday - Groove For A Cause

Event: Salsa Dura - Dance Party with Live Orchestra

When: Monday, January 30th - 8-11pm

Where: La Pena Cultural Center

Event: Get out and boogie for social justice. Every last Monday of the month, the Josh Jones and the La Peña Salsa Orchestra brings the raw power of salsa dura to La Peña’s stage. They will perform songs from your favorite salsa artists including Eddie Palmieri, Beny Moré, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, El Canario, Celia Cruz and many more. Grab yo’ friends and head on out to Berkeley and enjoy this 30, yes I said 30, person band.

Side note: La Pena Cultural Center has been promoting social justice, arts participation, and intercultural understanding since 1975. They're an awesome org to support.

Event: Readers Partners Tutor Orientation (This is a DiveIn FEATURED event)

When: Tuesday, January 31st - 5-6pm

Where: Centro del Pueblo

Event Description:

At this event, you’ll get to learn more about Reading Partners as an organization and learn how to be an effective literacy tutor to a local student. In one hour the Reading Partners team will cover a short overview of the program, which includes information on the students they help, the programs curriculum, tutor expectations, and the ways that their staff provides on-going training and support to these young kids.

Why should you be interested in this event? 1) Because helping kids is an awesome hobby and 2) you'll get to improve your own reading skills by reading more, which apparently not enough of us do (and it's affecting our elections).

Event: Homefront Resistance: SF in the Age of Trump (This is a DiveIn FEATURED event)

When: Wednesday, February 1st - 6-8pm

Where: The Women's Building

Event Description:

This special San Francisco Vision general meeting will be devoted to creating a plan of action to resist the Trump agenda in San Francisco. At their last general meeting and panel discussion, the team surveyed those in attendance to identify four issues to focus on in 2017 — Housing and homelessness, community health, racial justice and immigration, environmental justice, and the arts. On February 1st, the team will work intensively in small groups to brainstorm and identify our goals and objectives for each issue. Get involved.

Event: Resisting Trump in California

When: Friday, February 3rd - 3-7pm

Where: 155 Grand Ave, Oakland, CA 94612-3724, United States

Event Description: The Donald Trump administration has wasted no time unleashing a torrent of long-threatened attacks, beginning this week with women and immigrants in the cross-hairs. At the same time, millions have flooded the streets in protests — first of Trump himself, and now against the very first actions of his administration. Speakers are invited to talk about what will need to happen in California -- a state with a Democratic supermajority, to respond to Trumps political actions.

This event is hosted by Jacobin Magazine.
